Ellis- A Pit Bull

This is Ellis.  She is boarding for a few days. She is about 11 months old.    She was adopted from the pound just hours before being euthanized.  Her new family went to the pound that afternoon, and she was scheduled for euthanasia at 4 pm.  So they adopted her.  Not necessarily looking for a dog.  Not necessarily looking for a pit bull puppy.

She got lucky.  There are so many other dogs, and cats, that are not so fortunate.

Years ago, before petfinder and the using the internet to get pets adopted, the pound wanted me to bid on their euthanasia services.   Occasionally, they'll bring an injured animal by, and I'll do those.  Those are different.   But I couldn't even come up with a dollar amount.   I asked how many are you talking about?  The pound wasn't very proactive about finding homes for anyone.   Remember this was before petfinder.   The answer at the time,  4-7 per week.  About 1 per day.   1 per day.

And I said, "I don't care how much you pay me. There isn't enough money in the world to get me through therapy, to drive out to the pound each day and euthanize a dog or cat that just needs a home.  I realize that you need someone to do it, but it can't be me."    They weren't very happy.

Dr. Andy,

Congratulations on turning the pound down. It would be nice if they all could get homes, but as long as people don't spay and neuter, that will never happen.

However, there are some that come in where that is the best option. I sometimes wonder if you should have to pass a test to own an animal as a pet.

Bless you for turning it down. I couldn't handle it, either. Unfortunately, it's not only a lack of spaying and neutering. Locally, people are abandoning adult dogs and cats because they can't afford to keep them.

Beautiful pit bull. Best dogs ever!

I couldn't imagine having to euthanize that many either. Years ago, when I fostered for the Bull terrier club, we had 4 in a row that needed euthanized due to aggression or nuerological problems. It made me kind of a mental mess. I couldn't imagine one a day! Thank God for Pet Savers & the internet!

I'm glad you turned them down too! Our cat ran away, and I called the pound to see if he was there on Friday- no one called me back. so I called again today and they directed me to their website where they post pictures of the animals. a few minutes later I call back about one I think might be ours- it didn't seem likely, but I said I'd have to come out and see him. not four hours later I called back to say my husband was on his way out there about that cat- and they had already killed him! I'm so, so upset, and just don't know what to do.... it's awful :(

I'm sorry, I was catching up on your blog because it usually cheers me up, and here I go on a tirade. thank you for you blog, and all the wonderful photos and updates!
